Can You Make Money Writing on Medium? (My Earnings After Publishing 56 Articles)

I have published 56 articles on Medium over the last 6 months, and I want to share with you my experience, and my earning stats, after I get accepted to a Medium Partner Program, which is the main way to make money on this platform.

What is Medium?

In the beginning, let’s talk about what a Medium is.

Medium is a social publishing platform, that allows anyone to publish articles, blog posts, and more. 

It was created by Twitter co-founder Evan Williams. There are no advertisements, and it is open to authors of all backgrounds. 

It has a way of organizing content into collections based on topics.

Medium’s model is built on free and premium content. 

The free content is open, meaning that anyone can read it. 

The premium content, on the other hand, is restricted, and only available to those, who pay a monthly or yearly fee.

What is the Medium Partner Program?

While the Medium partner program was designed to help writers get paid for writing online, you have to meet some requirements.

Firstly, the Medium partner program is not available for all countries. As you can see, here is the list of all the supported countries. If you are not from any of these countries, you will not be accepted into their program.

Another requirement you have to meet is followers. This means you have to get at least 100 followers on Medium to join the partner program.

If you don’t meet this requirement, you should keep writing and building your community until you do. In my experience, it is not hard to get 100 followers when you are consistent.

On the other hand, if you apply and are accepted, you can start earning money from all your previous and future articles.

Medium partner earnings are calculated based on two methods:

• How much time did Medium users spend on reading your stories?
• How much of their monthly reading time is spent on your stories? 

The awesome thing about the Medium partner program is that it is completely free. You are getting paid for writing on Medium, even if you are not a paying member.

Medium Referral Program

However, there is another way to make additional income on Medium. It is called a referral program and it offers a recurring monthly income to writers on this platform.

This referral program works on a simple principle. You get a unique referral link that you can promote in your posts and if a reader becomes a Medium member by paying $5 per month or $50 a year, you get a cut from this money.

In other words, you’ll get $2.27 for every referred member with a monthly subscription or $2.01 for a yearly subscription.

How Much Money Do I Make on Medium?

So, how much money I do make on Medium every month?

To be honest, earnings on Medium are unpredictable.

Unless you’re a top-tier writer with thousands of followers, publishing articles on Medium won’t make you rich.

With this fact in mind, it is time to show you how much I’ve earned on this platform in the last few months.

As you can see, I’m getting 100 views per day on average for all my 56 articles.

And because I’ve been serious about writing on Medium only for the last six months, I’ve deleted most of my old articles and switched my niche, you can see a spike in the number of subscribers this year.

A great fact about Medium is that people can also subscribe to your email list, and every time you publish a new article, they get an email notification.

As I already said, I started posting more frequently on Medium in January this year and the earnings from the first few months are just a few dollars.

But from May, it gets interesting. I’m talking about $18 the previous month, and at least $22 this month.

Is that enough money?

I’m a blogger, YouTuber, and affiliate marketer and I sell my merch on Redbubble. I’m used to more income.

However, I am using Medium as a platform to get more visitors to my website. I am also using Medium to get subscribers to my email list.

This is the way, you should make money from Medium.
